Arrived.  Narita Airport convenience store bentos excite me.  Train to Ueno; check into our sufficiently small hotel room.  Tired. Hungry -Jetstars ‘meal deal’ offerings of Pie Face not so appealing- Find the nearest convenience store.  Lawsons.  Is. Amazing! Take an annoying amount of photos of food.  Continue on our intro Ueno discovery.

Find a ramen bar.  Gyoza’s taste amazing. (yep. thats my ramen threshold) Do some more walking.

Head to Ueno Park.  See some Temples.  A shrine.  Very impressive giant lotus’s.  Ueno Lake.  Have a mini Swan boat romance with Joce on the lake.

More walking, this time to Tokyo University of Arts.  Starts to pour as I choose to leave.  Someone very friendly at the uni gives me an umbrella as they send me out into the downpour.  No cabs! Just raindrops the size of Hershey’s Kisses and an umbrella that ain’t doing much.

A pointless cab ride that leaves me having to walk the same distance to the hotel later, soggy footed and looking like a drowned rat I make it to the hotel.  Shower.  Hair dry my shoes.

Train to Shibuya to meet Tsubasa!! What begins as a party of 3 ends in a party of 8.  22 rounds of highballs, oolong somethings, sake, beers and food at the Izakaya.  There’s talk of karaoke.  I have already lost my voice from talking.  Amazing night! What day is it!?

DAY TWO

UENO > SHIBUYA

Check out of Ueno hotel for the move to SHibuya air bnb later this afternoon.  Do a massive walk around of Ueno.  Markets.  Laneways.  Stalls.  Food.  Shopping.  Rain.  Shopping bags with rain protection.  More market wandering.  Reminds me of the Lady Markets in Hong Kong.  Except I’m finally on the other end of it… Gaijin prices!! More walking.

Looked at the thousandth pair of sneakers.  Found the only chinese snack place in the market.  Delicious Shen Jian Bao.  Time to move to Shibuya.

Finally get into the apartment.  Exhausted.  Hungry.  Head out for dinner.  Somehow it’s 9pm.  Agree on a random sushi train place.  Plates start to stack fast, theres multiple parties in my mouth! Meet up with Todd at a Hotdog bar.  People watch.  Joce drinks a bong water beer.  And sort of makes out with the hotdog statue.  Which is wearing socks, sneakers, and saucing itself.  Hella saucy!  Stumble into an arcade for sticker photos.  It’s just a sea of clampy toys and Ted dolls! Play some House of the Dead 4.  Find a bar for another drink. Stumble up into Strawberry Fields. 3 campari sodas. 2 cocktails. 2 Glenfiditch’s and 1 Guiness, a bowl of complimentary rice crackers, and 2 and a half hours of amazing records and music.

Cab home.  Get lost.  Walk the wrong direction.  Ask a policeman for directions.  He’s kind of hot. Walk some more.  Pass a wine bar that is still open at 3am so we stock in for a glass.  Our barman is Ryusuke.  He is also a DJ.  He has played with Sasha.  He likes the movie Lock Stock and 2 smoking barrells. It’s 3.45.  They close at 4!  Time to find our way home.

9 minute walk to find we were simply across the road from where the cab driver had dropped us in the first place!! ADVENTURES all night.  I wonder when we will get some sleep.

DAY THREE

AOYAMA

Blindening light bursts through the blinds.  Can’t sleep any more though my brain keeps telling me I can. Convince myself to get up to buy a Mochi.  Breakfast for the broken!

Decide to find Chrome Hearts Aoyama store.  Google maps says its a 23 minute walk. Anticipating it will take longer.  I always manage to get lost.  The walk between Hiroo and Aoyama is full of small streets, lined with amazing architecture and structured multi level homes with meticulously groomed gardens.

Somehow end up at an end destination that is an apartment building.  Chrome Hearts can be inconspicuous but this less then average looking 6 floor building with a 2nd floor dental office doesn’t look right.  4 hours, multiple google map wig outs everytime i’m near a bridge, 3 hand drawn maps -1 from an eccentric jeweller couple, 1 from some hipsters at Gramercy cafe, 1 from a friendly cab driver- an iced long black, 1 biscotti and more walking, i finally come to find the shrub building clad in all its glory.

I walked home afterwards -of course, not without getting caught in the rain- to find it was, in fact a 23 minute walk.   Oh well. Thanks for the extended scenic tour of Aoyama google maps!!!

Night time brought another fun adventure.  Joce had also gotten lost earlier.  In her blind wandering, found a tiny flatiron like triangle building, housing a tiny 10 seater Italian bistro.  Decide to head there.  Arrive to a full house at 8pm.  Its a half hour wait.  We go to nearby Bicycle Bar to kill time with a drink. Oooops…. Somehow it’s 10pm.  Go back to a now empty Tavern Quale.

Campari.  Antipasti. Some additional patrons join the bar.  Prosecco’s. Prawns. Bread sticks.  Calamari fritti.  Joce and I go in and out of wanting tiramisu.  We choose more prosecco.  There’s a total of 6 of us in the tavern now.  Plus Mimi, the french poodle.  I don’t know how to tell them I’m pretty certain it’s a cock-a-doodle.  We all take turns chatting to the friendly, round faced chef/host/barman Niake-san ? Naoko-san ? It’s a blur. It’d been 3 hours of wonderful excess.  Now for an early night!

DAY FOUR

NAKAMEGURO > EBISU

CHROME HEARTS.  COMME DES GARCON.  SAW A MINIATURE PONY GET A WALK.  JUST A REGULAR DAY IN TOKYO I’M TOLD…

NEW ORDER MAGAZINE LAUNCH.  LOTS OF AUSTRALIANS.  JO. SARAH. FREE BURGERS.  WALKED HOME.

JOCE WENT TO ONSEN.  I WENT FOR A WALK TO FIND A NIGHT CAP.  SMALL ITALIAN BISTRO.  A BOTTLE OF PROSECCO AND A LOT OF TALKING TO THE BAR MANAGER. HE IS VERY FRIENDLY AND CHATTY…  SOMEHOW IT’S ALREADY MIDNIGHT!!

DAY FIVE

ON TOUR TOKYO!! ADIDAS!

MEET THE GANG AT SHINJUKU STATION.  RAN INTO SOME J-POP STARS EN ROUTE TO SHINJUKU.  TSUBASA LEADS THE PACK TO SOME SORT OF DOCKLANDS LIKE AREA.  2 TRAVELLERS AND SOME AMAZING BAY VIEWS WE FINALLY GET TO AN AMAZING LOOKING SET AND WATERFRONT FESTIVAL.  CANT’ BELIEVE THIS IS FREE.

DRINKS.  DANCING.  VIEWS.  MEET PEOPLE.  TEQUILA SHOTS.  MORE DANCING.  MORE PEOPLE.  THE SUN SETS TO REVEAL AN AMAZING VIEW OF THE HARBOUR.  WIFI STOPS WORKING.  WONDER IF JOCE DECIDED TO COME.  AND HOW ON EARTH SHE IS GOING TO FIND US.  I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE I AM.  RIDE ON SOME SHOULDERS.  DRINK SOME MORE.  JOCELYN APPEARS!! MORE DANCING!!

COME TO AN END.  MOBB DEEP ON THE CARRIAGE.  BACK TO SHINJUKU FOR IZAKAYA DINNER.  2000YEN PER HEAD UNLIMITED DRINKS.  THERES ABOUT 25 OF US.  APOLOGIES  TO TOKYO FOR OUR HEINOUS MOBB BEHAVIOUR.

CALPIS SOUR COCKTAILS.  A GIANT TATAMI.  MORE PEOPLE JOIN.  SO MANY FACES. SO MUCH CHEERSING.  AND OF COURSE… CATCHIN’ TSUBASA IN THAT SIGNATURE LEG UP-EATING POSE!  SO GOOD TO BE ROUND THIS GUY AGAIN!! IT’S BEEN A LOUD. FUN. DAY. TIME TO GO. MY LEGS ARE BURNING FROM ALL THE PARTY.

DAY SIX

TOKYO > NAOSHIMA

A DAY IN TRANSIT ON THE SHINKANSEN.  SHINGAWA > OKAYAMA > CHAYAMACHI > UNO PORT > FERRY TO NAOSHIMA.  WORLDS MOST ATTRACTIVE BENTOS AND PINK SKIES AT UNO PORT.

ARRIVE TO NAOSHIMA AT NIGHT.  MISS LAST BUS TO TSUTSUJO LODGE.  THE FRIENDLY PORT GUARD GETS HIS MATE TO GIVE US A LIFT TO THE LODGE.  There was some brief exchanging of noises between the friendly Japanese man and us when he gets us to the entrance!  People are so friendly!! ITS A VERY BASIC BEACH FRONT LODGE.  WE WANTED A YURT.  WE GOT A CARAVAN.

TINNIES BY THE PIER.  PARKS AND REC.  EARLY NIGHT.  THE BATHROOMS ARE FAR AWAY FROM THE CARAVANS.  AND I’M SCARED OF THE DARK!! NO PEE-ING!

DAY SEVEN

NAOSHIMA BENNESSE HOUSE

EARLY MORNING WALKS ALONG THE BEACH FRONT BEFORE CHECK OUT AT TSUTSUJISO LODGE.  TAKE SOME SHOTS WITH THE PUMPKIN.  LEISURE WALKS AND BENNESSE GROUNDS WHILE WE AWAIT OUR PARK SUITE
